Nearly 1 in 2 Americans’ Information Stolen Last Year

Dec 28, 2017

Have you opened a new bank account within the past year? How about applied for a loan? Or took out a new credit card? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, then the chances are good that at least some of your personal information was stolen last year.

2017 cyber fraud brought the Equifax breach, resulting in the compromise of an estimated 145 million Americans personal information – almost 45% of us!

The thieves made off with names, credit card numbers, drivers license details, addresses, birthdates, and even Social Security numbers.

Why should I be concerned?
Thieves can sell much of the stolen information on the online black market, or the “deep web,” for a hefty price. Social Security numbers can be sold to individuals that have already damaged their own, to be used on mortgage or car loan applications. Drivers’ license information can be provided to make a new license, then provided to the cop when “you” have run a red light.

When credit ratings are damaged or warrants for outstanding traffic and speeding tickets are issued, guess who is on the hook? The real you. (Read about one person’s experience trying to get her identity cleaned up.)

So what can you do? Many organizations that experience a data breach, like Equifax, will offer a free, or reduced, enrollment in a credit monitoring service. If you haven’t already done so, be sure to register for it.

Unfortunately the free service can be limited in the data that’s being monitored or the length of time you’ll receive the monitoring (often good for just one year post-breach) and the help that you’ll get if your information is used fraudulently.
